Sail the World's Second-Longest Barrier Reef.

Atolls, blue holes, and a cruising ground most charterers haven't gotten to yet.

Overview

Belize is the cruising ground for charterers who've done the Caribbean a few times and want something less obvious. The Belize Barrier Reef is the longest in the Western Hemisphere — 190 miles north to south — and it shapes the entire trip. Most cruising happens inside the reef in 10–25 feet of protected water; the reef itself is the eastern boundary. Three atolls — Turneffe, Lighthouse, Glover's — sit further offshore and require a longer reach to get to.

The charter market in Belize is smaller than the BVI or Bahamas, which is the appeal. Anchorages are quieter, beach bars are less developed, and the snorkeling and diving are best-in-class — the Great Blue Hole, Half Moon Caye, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve.

What's hard: Belize is less developed than other charter destinations and the cruising guides are thinner. Provisioning needs more planning. The atoll passages are short open-water reaches, which means weather windows matter more than in the Sea of Abaco.

Best for charterers with a few trips under their belt looking for less-trafficked cruising. Divers — Belize is genuinely a world-class dive destination. Couples or small groups.

Anchorages Worth Planning Around

Ranguana Caye

Why stop here: Privately-owned 2.5-acre caye, half-day's sail from Placencia. The owners run a small lodge and beach bar that welcomes charter visitors. Closest-thing-to-a-private-island feel without going to the atolls.
Holding & approach: Anchor in the lee, west side, in 12–18 feet of sand. Holding good.
What to do: Shore-side drinks. Snorkel the reef on the east side. Sunset is excellent.

Half Moon Caye (Lighthouse Reef Atoll)

Why stop here: Half Moon Caye Natural Monument — Belize's first nature reserve. Frigate birds and red-footed boobies nest here in the thousands. Beach is exceptional. Lighthouse Reef is the atoll with the Blue Hole.
Holding & approach: Off-reef passage from inside the barrier reef. Weather window required — 40nm of open water from the inside. Anchor in the protected lee in 15–25 feet of sand.
What to do: Walk the boardwalk through the nesting colony at the south end. Dive or snorkel the Blue Hole. Snorkel the wall on the east side.

Tobacco Caye

Why stop here: Working Garifuna fishing village on a 5-acre caye. Authentic; not built for tourists. Two bars, a guesthouse or three, and lobster pulled in that morning.
Holding & approach: Channel approach from the south — well-marked. Anchor outside the channel in 15 feet of sand. Mooring buoys also available.
What to do: Have lobster at one of the two guesthouses (call ahead on VHF). Snorkel the channel — the reef is 30 feet from the boat.
